Listening Resources

Improving your listening skills

Interactive listening is the best approach to improve your listening skills. What is interactive listening? Is the listening that takes place during a conversation. During a conversation, what you hear requires a response or action.

  1. Listen to videos/ podcast on topics of your interest (one-minute and a half max for beginners; 30-minutes for intermediate).

  2. Listen to the video entirely for the first time. Pay attention to the title and the images. Use your background knowledge and experiences to infer the overall meaning.

  3. When you listen to the video for a second time, start taking notes (Beginners: words you hear or understand; Intermediate: detailed notes).

  4. When you listen to the video for a third time, answer the six "W's": Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How. For learners at the intermediate level, write a summary after answering the six "W's."

Speaking Skills

Improving your speaking skills

The best way to improve your speaking and listening skills is by interacting with people.

  • Attend Meetup Groups (choose the appropriate language level).

  • Choose the appropriate language level (beginner, intermediate, advanced).

  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

  • Read or listen to something that interests you and repeat it out loud in front of the mirror. Articulate every word and pay attention to the intonation. Repeat it several times.

  • Anticipate what you’re going to say when you meet your friends. Write a short dialogue and practice it several times.

Reading & Writing Skills

Improving your reading and writing skills

  • Read materials that interest you.

    • Look at the title and use your previous background knowledge to anticipate what the reading will be about.

    • Highlight the cognates and five new words and make a list or flash cards (beginners).

    • For intermediate up to 12 words (try to infer the meaning by using the context).

    • Answer to the six "W's" questions.

    • Write a summary of what you understood (intermediate).

    • Use the new words in sentences in a different context (intermediate).

  • Use social media to stay in touch with your friends or relatives who speak the language.
